Lottery Taxes
How US lottery winnings are taxed: when federal tax is withheld, why withholding is not the final bill, and how state tax on prizes differs.
Reads in Lottery Taxes

In the United States, lottery winnings are taxable income. Federal tax applies to every prize, whatever its size, and most states tax prizes too. What changes with the size of the prize is whether tax is taken out before you are paid. Withholding is a down payment on your tax, not the final amount, so a winner can still owe more, or less, when filing.
When is federal tax withheld from lottery winnings?
Federal rules require the lottery to withhold income tax at 24 percent on prizes over $5,000. Smaller prizes are usually paid in full, with no federal tax taken out, but they are still taxable and belong on your tax return. The lottery also reports larger prizes to the IRS on Form W-2G, and gives you a copy.
Why can I owe more than was withheld?
The 24 percent rate is a flat withholding rate. Your actual tax depends on your total income for the year and the bracket the prize pushes you into. A large prize can take part of your income into brackets above 24 percent, and the difference is due when you file. A smaller prize may be taxed below 24 percent once everything is added up.
How do states tax lottery prizes?
It depends on the state. Some withhold state tax from prizes above a threshold set by the state, some collect it only when you file, and some do not tax lottery winnings at all. Where you live and where you bought the ticket can both matter, so the rules of both states are worth checking.
Can losses offset lottery winnings?
Gambling losses, including losing tickets, can be deducted against gambling winnings only if you itemise deductions, and only within the limits the tax rules set for that year. You need records to support the claim.
How does Lucky Lotto cover lottery taxes?
We work from IRS rules and state revenue department guidance, and do the sums in plain numbers: what is withheld, what is owed and when. We are not tax advisers, and for a significant prize a qualified tax professional is worth the fee.
