Claim: Baccarat Strategy Beats the House

This is wrong, and it gets taught constantly. The misconception persists because poker and blackjack have legitimate strategy edges. Baccarat does not. The game is mechanically simple: the dealer (baccarat calls it the "Banker") and the player get two cards each. Whichever hand totals closest to 9 wins. Tens and face cards count as zero. Aces count as one. The Banker hand draws a third card on certain totals; the player hand has less control. That is the entire decision tree.

There is no secret. Bet on the Banker if you must bet. The Banker hand wins slightly more often (50.68% after commission), and that is due to drawing order, not the player's skill. This is why the house charges commission on Banker wins. This is not exploitable.

Claim: Card Counting Works in Baccarat

Wrong. Card counters win at blackjack because the composition of the remaining deck materially changes the expected value of decisions. In baccarat, composition does not change decision-making. The Banker draws or stands based on fixed rules. The player draws or stands based on fixed rules. Knowing that ten cards left in the shoe rather than eighty changes the odds slightly, but it does not give you an edge because you cannot act on that information. You are betting before the hand is dealt. The edge is fractional and not worth the attention1.

Claim: You Can Get Better at Baccarat

Partially true. You can learn to bet consistently, manage your bankroll, and avoid stupid mistakes. You cannot beat the game's built-in house edge. If you must gamble, learning to lose slowly is the only strategy. Baccarat's edge is tight: around 1.06% on Banker bets, 1.24% on Player bets. That is low relative to roulette (2.7%) or keno (25-40%). But you cannot beat 1.06%.

How to Actually Learn
