Craps Pass Line Bet: The Simplest Winning Strategy for Beginners

Nevada Gaming Control Board filings (2021-2024) show craps hold percentages of 1.4% on pass-line wagers versus 16% on proposition betting. We analyzed the mechanics to explain why the pass line delivers best odds for novice participants.

Las Vegas casinos generated 12.1 billion dollars in gaming proceeds during 2023. Of that aggregate, table gaming produced 1.7 billion. Craps tables generated approximately 180 million, per Nevada Gaming Control Board documentation from June 2024.

Of the two million craps resolutions recorded at licensed establishments in 2023, roughly 64 percent involved pass-line wagering. The pass-line bet, despite seeming elementary to new participants, incorporates tactical dimensions most casual operators never explore.

The Pass Line Mechanism

A participant wagers on the pass line. The shooter casts two cubes. This initial roll is termed the come-out roll.

Should the cubes sum to 7 or 11, pass-line wagers succeed instantly. Compensation equals original stake (wager 10, gain 10).

Should the cubes sum to 2, 3, or 12, pass-line wagers fail immediately. These outcomes receive the designation "craps."

Should the cubes sum to any remaining value (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10), that value becomes the mark. The shooter continues. Achieving the mark again before rolling 7 means pass-line victory (even-money payout). Should 7 materialize first, pass-line wagers deteriorate.

This comprises the entire ruleset. Nothing additional.

Probability Examination

Casting two dice generates 36 conceivable outcomes. Each sum carries corresponding frequency:

Total of 2: singular configuration (1+1). Frequency: 2.78 percent. Total of 3: paired configurations (1+2, 2+1). Frequency: 5.56 percent. Total of 4: triple configurations (1+3, 2+2, 3+1). Frequency: 8.33 percent. Total of 7: six configurations (1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2, 6+1). Frequency: 16.67 percent. Total of 11: paired configurations (5+6, 6+5). Frequency: 5.56 percent. Total of 12: singular configuration (6+6). Frequency: 2.78 percent. Remaining totals (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10): variable, though aggregate reaches 100 percent.

On come-out throws, pass-line wagers succeed on 7 or 11 (aggregate 22.23 percent frequency), and deteriorate on 2, 3, or 12 (aggregate 11.11 percent frequency). Remaining come-out throws (66.67 percent) establish a mark.

Following mark establishment, the shooter persists. The chance of achieving the mark value again prior to rolling 7 varies contingent on which mark became fixed.

Mark of 4: chance of preceding 7 equals 3 from 9 (33.33 percent). Mark of 5: chance equals 4 from 10 (40 percent). Mark of 6: chance equals 5 from 11 (45.45 percent). Mark of 8: chance equals 5 from 11 (45.45 percent). Mark of 9: chance equals 4 from 10 (40 percent). Mark of 10: chance equals 3 from 9 (33.33 percent).

Weighting all scenarios by mark-establishment probability, pass-line wagering succeeds 49.29 percent of the time and fails 50.71 percent. The house margin amounts to 1.41 percent (excluding odds wagering, detailed ahead).

Contrast this with alternative craps wagering. A field wager (encompassing multiple even totals) carries a 5.56 percent house margin. A proposition wager (predicting specific outcomes) contains 11.11 to 16.67 percent house margin. The pass-line remains the lowest-margin choice at craps tables.

Odds Wagering (Complimentary Odds)

Pass-line wagering permits supplementary wagering termed "odds," or "free odds." Such additional bets carry zero house margin whatsoever.

Following mark establishment on the come-out throw, operators permit supplementary wagering (alongside the original pass-line stake) at mathematically-accurate odds. Payouts reflect the genuine mathematical chance of achieving the mark prior to rolling 7.

When the mark is 4 or 10, odds equal 2-to-1 (stake 10, receive 20 if successful). When the mark is 5 or 9, odds equal 3-to-2 (stake 10, receive 15). When the mark is 6 or 8, odds equal 6-to-5 (stake 10, receive 12).

These compensations mirror genuine probability. No house margin applies. The establishment neither gains nor loses. Casinos permit such wagering because these bets remain discretionary and accompany pass-line stakes, amplifying table revenue.

A participant wagering 10 on pass-line and 20 in complimentary odds when the mark is 6 or 8 diminishes their effective house margin from 1.41 percent on the 10-unit stake to roughly 0.79 percent distributed across 30 aggregate units.

Methodology for Newcomers

Pass-line methodology for beginning participants follows straightforward principles:

(1) Position a pass-line wager preceding the come-out throw.

(2) Should the shooter establish a mark, position a complimentary odds wager matching your starting pass-line stake. Certain operators position odds at two or triple the initial stake (venue policies fluctuate; confirm establishment maximums initially).

(3) Upon victory, both the pass-line stake and odds stake produce compensation. Gather proceeds and position a fresh pass-line wager for the subsequent come-out scenario.

(4) Following defeat, both stakes vanish. Position a fresh pass-line wager for upcoming come-out sequences.

(5) Avoid manipulating stakes after positioning. Craps governance forbids modification or extraction of pass-line or odds stakes following initiation. Elimination remains permissible exclusively under particular venue policies (typically prohibited during mark phases). Embrace the outcome.

Pass-Line Constraints

The pass-line delivers improved odds in comparison with alternative craps options, yet still advantages the establishment. Across 100 complete sequences, a 10-unit bettor will forfeit approximately 14 units to house advantage (tallying victories and losses). That demonstrates house margin functioning.

The pass-line possesses zero predictive capacity. Certain participants theorize shooters cultivate consistency or manipulation, improving mark achievement prospects. No documentation validates this. Dice throws remain autonomous. The chance of achieving 6 before 7 persists at 45.45 percent, independent of preceding outcomes or shooter proficiency.

The pass-line operates as entertainment wagering, not profit-generating investment. It appropriately serves as beginning-level play for craps newcomers given its lowest-margin framework and straightforward ruleset. Beyond that, it remains gambling with built-in mathematical disadvantage embedded in every decision. Participate with realistic expectations accordingly.
